American Sign Language Alphabet

Have you ever heard of American Sign Language alphabets? American Sign Language alphabets were introduced so that you can use that easily for communication with or between people who cannot speak. The basis for an American Sign Language alphabet is that all the alphabets of the American language are depicted or can be explained with hands. American Sign Language alphabet are also used in other countries such as Germany, Finland etc. as the characters used in the languages are similar in these countries.

In an American sign language, all the alphabets of the language have a special hand movement in which we usually face the palm of our hand towards the other person. American Sign Language alphabets are used primarily in cases where you cannot afford to misspell even a single alphabet. For example, while communicating your name to bank officials for documentation purpose you would like your name to be correct in every respect.

The best way to use American Sign Language alphabets is that if you are communicating a stream of alphabets at once then you should understand the importance of pause between the two alphabets so that the viewer can understand you easily. Many a times people do not consider the use of jewelry while using American Sign Language but that is an incorrect method as use of excessive jewelry may distract the viewer resulting in misinterpretation. Sometimes even long nails may distract the movement of your fingers and thumbs.

The other problem faced by the viewer is with the people who usually bounce their hands between every letter. It becomes very difficult for the viewer to watch or understand the hand movement if the bouncing is extreme. However, the communicator may use bouncing technique while communicating the double letters like double �S�. According to an American Sign Language alphabet, convention the palm of the communicator should be facing towards the viewer but there is an exception with certain characters like �G� and �H� where you need to show the sideways of your palm.

What will you do if you have to communicate the figures or numbers? It is not a problem if you are using the American Sign Language alphabets, as there is a unique hand movement for every number. The way the numbers should be depicted for every other use is different and depends for what you want to use these numbers. For example, the way of expressing time is different from that of expressing normal digits.

There is no meaning of communication if you misinterpret or misspell alphabets, as it would only lead to confusion. Therefore, you should learn American Sign Language alphabets before using it.
